For Kollmorgen, Automotion ACE500, ACE1200/1300, OFDL, Kodak and other drives | Professional fault location, repair and testing
Coverage: professional Drum Driver repair for Kodak Trendsetter, Achieve, Magnus and related equipment
Problem Summary
Servo drives inside Kodak CTP equipment — including Kollmorgen and ACE500 / ACE1200 / ACE1300 Drum Drivers — are now entering a concentrated repair window. Many have been in service for ten to twenty years, and the power supply circuit, current sampling circuit, power module, control board and feedback circuit inside the drive are drifting out of specification or failing.
Typical reported faults are Drum Driver Over Current alarms, a drum motor that will not start, Drive Fault / Amplifier Fault messages, and intermittent stops during production.
Many of these drive models are discontinued, and original supply channels are limited. Replacing a drive can cost RMB 20,000–40,000 depending on model, availability and condition — and a replacement does not always clear the fault, because the cause may sit in the motor, encoder, control board, cabling or mechanical load.
DTP TECH has developed a dedicated Drum Driver Diagnostic & Test Software for the Kodak CTP drum drive system. The practical result: instead of swapping a drive on suspicion, the fault is located from measured data and the repaired drive is tested and verified before it returns to production.

Field Symptoms
Large numbers of Kodak Trendsetter, Achieve, Magnus and Flexcel NX machines are still in daily production. As service life increases, the following symptoms appear:
- Drum Driver Over Current (drive over-current alarm)
- Drum Motor Cannot Start
- Drive Fault / Amplifier Fault
- Motor starts, then immediately goes into a protection stop
- Drive alarms under no-load conditions
- Drum fails to accelerate, or runs at an abnormal speed
- Intermittent faults and sudden stops during a run
The difficulty is that traditional swap-and-test troubleshooting carries both a high parts cost and a real downtime risk.

Why the Drum Drive Matters
If the laser system is the eyes of a CTP device, the servo motor and drive are its muscles and nerves.
In high-precision industrial equipment, a servo drive system does more than turn a motor. It handles speed control, current regulation, dynamic response and run protection.
On a Kodak CTP, the stability of the Drum Drive System directly affects drum speed, scanning synchronization, plate quality and overall machine reliability.
Kollmorgen servo drive products are widely used in industrial automation and precision motion. The same drive technology appears not only in Kodak CTP but also in digital presses such as HP Indigo.
Precision drives still face one unavoidable problem: electronic components age, while production equipment is expected to keep running.
What the Alarm Actually Means
Over Current is one of the most common — and most easily misread — faults in industrial servo drives.
An over-current alarm does not automatically mean the power module has failed.
Possible causes also include current sensor bias error, a faulty sampling amplifier, an abnormal reference voltage, control signal problems, and motor or external load issues.
The real question is therefore not which board to replace first, but which circuit is actually producing the wrong signal.

Diagnostic Path
DTP TECH has studied the communication and control behaviour of the Kodak CTP drum drive system and the related Kollmorgen drives. Through protocol analysis, hardware testing, electronic circuit research and test platform development, the dedicated Drum Driver Diagnostic & Test Software was built.
The core value of the software is not reading a single alarm code. It combines the drive's internal operating data with external circuit measurements to determine where and why the fault occurs.
Before:
Drive alarms → suspect the power module → replace the control board → retest → still no confirmed fault.
After:
Read drive status → analyse static current → check dynamic current → compare against known-good parameters → narrow the fault range → locate the abnormal circuit → repair and retest.
The goal is to make every repair measurable, recordable and verifiable.
What the Diagnostic Software Checks
1. Static current and sampling circuit
Even before the drive turns a motor, the internal current sampling system carries useful diagnostic information.
Under normal conditions, certain current detection channels should sit within a defined zero-current offset range.
If the sampling circuit shifts, drifts or produces an abnormal signal, the drive can trigger over-current protection without any real load current. DTP analyses this through a dedicated test procedure that combines software data with hardware measurement.
2. Dynamic current and running state
Where the appropriate test conditions exist, the following can be examined:
- Current response during motor start-up
- Current change during acceleration and deceleration
- Steady-state running current
- Drive enable and protection states
- The relationship between current anomalies and alarms
- Stability across repeated starts and continuous running
Comparing a faulty drive against a known-good drive speeds up fault location.
3. Precise over-current analysis
See the section above on what the alarm actually means. Through software diagnosis combined with circuit-level measurement, DTP can further separate a genuine over-current condition from a false alarm generated by the detection circuit — which reduces blind parts replacement.
4. Independent test and verification after repair
Repairing a drive does not finish the job.
Using the test platform, DTP re-tests the drive's start-up, running, protection and repeated-operation states, and keeps the necessary test records.
The end goal of a repair is not to clear an alarm. It is to restore reliable operation.

Why Professional Repair Is Worth More Than Replacement
For discontinued industrial drives, repair is not only a cost saving. It is a way to extend the working life of the machine.
First, it avoids unnecessary replacement.
When the fault is limited to current sampling, the control circuit or a few electronic components, there is no need to replace the entire drive.
Second, it reduces downtime risk.
Fault location, repair and re-testing cut the time lost to repeated removal, refitting and blind substitution.
Third, it provides long-term support for older equipment.
Even when the original manufacturer has stopped producing a drive model, circuit-level repair and functional verification can still extend its service life. For the many Kodak CTP machines still running worldwide, this matters.
