Kodak MAGNUS 800 Won't Connect at Startup? An MSB Board CAN BUS Communication Repair Case
Problem Summary
A Kodak MAGNUS 800 CTP system could not connect to its control computer after startup.
The Kodak MAGNUS 800 is one of the CTP systems with a large installed base. As equipment ages, some faults have moved beyond routine mechanical and power-supply problems into mainboard, communication, and component-aging issues.
This case was a typical example: after the machine was powered on, the control computer could not establish normal communication with the device.
The confirmed repair result: the fault was traced to the MSB board's CAN BUS communication section, a related communication chip was found working abnormally, and chip-level repair restored normal startup connection without replacing the whole MSB board.
Field Symptoms
After power-on, the control computer could not connect normally to the Kodak MAGNUS 800.
A no-connection symptom can have many possible causes: the control computer, network, power supply, MSB board, or internal communication.
When checking the MSB board, we found a key symptom:
Of the two CAN BUS communication status LEDs, only one lit normally. The other never lit.
This detail was very important.
Combining the equipment startup process and communication architecture, we narrowed the fault area to:
An abnormality in the MSB board's CAN BUS communication circuit.

Error Meaning
The startup no-connection condition was not a single error code. It meant the control computer could not establish normal communication with the CTP device.
The MSB board's CAN BUS status LEDs provided a more specific clue: the MSB board communication path needed to be examined.
Diagnostic Path
In a traditional repair approach, this kind of fault could easily be judged as:
MSB board damaged; replace the entire board.
For imported CTP equipment that has been in service for many years, whole-board replacement often brings several problems:
- Spare parts are increasingly scarce.
- Prices are high.
- Used boards also carry aging risks.
We therefore continued testing the CAN BUS communication section of the MSB board.
By checking the communication lines stage by stage, we eventually located a related communication chip that was working abnormally.

What Was Checked On Site
The MSB board was inspected, with particular attention to the CAN BUS communication area and its indicator status.
The communication circuit was checked level by level along the signal path.
The fault was narrowed from the whole board to the CAN BUS communication section, and then to a related communication chip.
Repair Action
The faulty communication chip was replaced.
The related circuits on the MSB board were checked.
The board was reinstalled, and the machine was powered on for testing.
Final Result
After the replacement, the MAGNUS 800 was restarted.
Both CAN BUS communication status LEDs returned to normal.
The control computer and the device successfully established communication, and startup connection returned to normal.
Further startup and operation tests were carried out, and the original connection fault disappeared.
The fault was solved.
This repair did not actually replace the entire MSB board. Instead, through fault symptoms, communication status, and circuit analysis, the problem was ultimately located to the board-level communication circuit and a specific component.
Engineering Lesson
This is an increasingly important approach for repairing older equipment:
If the board can be repaired, do not replace it lightly. If the fault can be traced to a component, keep narrowing the scope.
For Kodak MAGNUS, TRENDSETTER, ACHIEVE, and other CTP systems that have been running for years, many so-called "mainboard failure" or "control board failure" cases do not mean the entire circuit board is unrepairable.
The real difficulty is often:
How to use equipment errors, indicator lights, communication status, and circuit logic to quickly find the actual fault point.
